NAVSEA carries out these functionsfor ships and craft, shipboard weapons systemsand expendable ordnance, and air-launched minesand torpedoes. This command is also responsiblefor the above functions in shipboard systems andcomponents. Some of these are propulsion(including nuclear), power-generating, sonar,search radar, and auxiliary equipment. NAVSEAis responsible for ship system integration and forcoordination of logistic support for ships.NAVSEA has central authority for ship andnuclear power safety; for explosives, propellants,and actuating parts; and for explosive safety andexplosive ordnance disposal. This command alsoprovides technical and material support for divingand for salvage of stranded and sunken ships,craft, aircraft, and other objects. NAVSEA alsocoordinates shipbuilding conversion and repair inthe Navy and DOD.Naval Air Systems CommandThe Commander,mand (NAVAIR), isNaval Air Systems Com-responsible for research,1-11development, test, evaluation, procurement, andlogistic support in several areas. These areasinclude Navy and Marine Corps aircraft, airlaunched weapons, and other aviation-relatedequipment. NAVAIR is responsible for thesystems integration of aircraft weapons systemsand for audiovisual and meteorological equip-ment. This command manages target ranges andtest facilities in support of these needs.Naval Supply Systems CommandThe Commander, Naval Supply SystemsCommand (NAVSUP), develops supply manage-ment policies and methods. NAVSUP alsocontrols the Naval Supply System, publicationsand printing, the resale program, the Navy StockFund, and the field purchasing services. NAVSUPprovides material support for materials handling,food service equipment, and special clothing. Itprovides accounting support to Navy activities asassigned and is responsible for transportation ofNavy property.Bureau of Medicine and SurgeryThe Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery(BUMED), directs the provision of medical anddental services for authorized personnel withinassigned geographic and mission-specific com-mands.
