10-20Officers are also divided into line officers and staffcorps officers. A star is worn on the sleeve or shoulderboard of the line officer, depending on the uniform. Theline category is subdivided into unrestricted andrestricted line.Only unrestricted line officers are eligible forcommand at sea and the command of aircraft squadrons,fleets, and shore bases such as naval bases and naval airstations. Included in this category are limited dutyofficers (LDOs), who have been specifically authorizedto assume such command and certain naval aviators.Restricted line officers are those designated forengineering or other special duty, such ascommunications, naval intelligence, photography, andother technical fields. They aren’t eligible for commandat sea but may assume command of designated shorefacilities.Staff corps officers are specialists in certainareas, such as supply and medicine. They wear staffcorps insignia (fig. 10-15). A doctor can become thecommanding officer (CO) of a hospital or a medicalschool or the chief of the Bureau of Medicine. A supplyofficer can become the CO of a supply depot or a schoolor the head of the Navy Supply Systems Command.When officers are of the same grade and date ofcommissioning, but from different officer’s categories,seniority takes precedence in the following order:1. NurseIn addition to regular commissioned officers, theNavy has another group of officers called commissionedwarrant officers.Warrant OfficersThe Navy needs specialists to supervise theoperation of equipment and weapons and needs enlistedpersonnel to maintain them.
