SUMMARYSecurity of classified material is serious business.Potential enemies are always looking for a chance togain access to our most guarded secrets. Just one day offailing to safeguard classified material could result inthe compromise of extremely sensitive material. Thesecurity of classified material not only rests with thepersonnel that have access to it on a daily basis, but alsoincludes every member of a command. We all have aduty to ensure that only the people requiring access toclassified material are allowed to see or use it. The sameis true of how we discuss our daily routine. Even if youdon’t have access to classified material on a daily basis, you could possibly have knowledge of certain exercisesor deployment times that world be of benefit to potentialenemies. Think carefully before you start talking aboutupcoming events. Every person in the room is notcleared to have this type of information. Putting piecesof information together to determine what is happeningis easy for foreign agents. The same is true when talkingon the telephone. Very few phones aboard ship andalmost none in the civilian community are secure.Electronic eavesdropping is another way foreign agentscollect intelligence data. Be careful of what you say;someone other than the person you called could belistening.Terrorist activity, particularly when you are visitinga foreign country, should always be of concern. Whileyou should not let it interfere with your enjoyment ofvisiting a foreign country, you must always be alert towhat is going on around you. By taking an extra fewminutes to survey your surroundings, you could identifya potentially hazardous situation. The international agreements discussed weredesigned to protect members of the armed forces. TheStatus of Forces Agreement protects you when you arestationed in or visiting foreign countries. The GenevaConvention affords you protection if you become aPOW. The Law of Armed Conflict protects you in theevent of a war. The articles and rules of theseagreements will only protect you if you conductyourself according to U.S. and international law. Youhave a duty to conduct yourself in a manner that will notbring discredit upon your country, your service, oryourself.REVIEW 1 ANSWERSA1. The three levels of security are—a. Top Secretb.
