Miscellaneous Classified MaterialMaterials such as rejected copies, typewriterribbons, carbons, and other similar items used duringthe production of a classified document are handled in away that protects the material. Destroy such materialwhen you no longer need it. You don’t need to mark thismaterial as classified unless it’s necessary to ensure itsprotection.TRANSMITTING CLASSIFIED MATERIALThe rules for transmitting classified material can befound in the Department of the Navy (DoN) InformationSecurity Program, SECNAVINST 5510.36. Accordingto SECNAVINST 5510.36, commanding officers mustmake sure that only appropriately cleared personnel orcarriers transmit, transport, escort, or hand-carryclassified information. Unless a specific kind oftransmission or transportation is restricted, the meansselected should minimize the risk of a loss orcompromise while permitting the use of the mostcost-effective mode of conveyance.Classified telephone conversations are permittedonly over secure communication circuits. These circuitsmust be approved for the classification level of theinformation being discussed. Every attempt must bemade to make sure that the classified information is notcompromised to unauthorized personnel.COPYING CLASSIFIED MATERIALU.S. classified information can be reproduced onlyto the extent required by operational necessity.However, the agency that originates the informationmay restrict reproduction of the material, orreproduction of the information may be restrictedbecause of applicable statutes or directives.22-10Student Notes:Figure 22-5.—Rolled or folded documents.
